The way a player plays his starting
hands, together with his betting
style
is called a player style. There are four main player styles in poker.
1. Tight Passive
2. Tight Aggressive
3. Loose
Aggressive
4. Loose Passive
Tight Passive
Also known as the nit, that evades confrontations and only
plays the best startings hands. Tight Passive players tend to avoid large pots with marginal holdings and
they do
not like to gamble. When you are all-in with a Tight Passive player you are usually behind.
Tight Aggressive
The Tight Aggressive player style is based on the assumption
that since you play few and only good hands, many opponents will give you credit
for a strong hand when you bet or raise. Sometimes, they might even throw away a
better hand than yours if you raise them.
Tight Aggressive players do not
like to call, they rather raise if the hand is good enough to be played.
Loose Aggressive
The Loose Aggressive player is in many pots, plays a
lot of hands and raises many of the hands he plays. It is a high variance style and the swings
that come with the player style can be brutal, but brings
a great deal of excitement to the game.
Loose Passive
Also known as the calling station. The Loose Passive
players consistently calls bets and rarely raises himself. He will often chase draws
without the correct odds and makes mistakes all day long. This style is a losing
player style.
