Choosing the best table is a poker skill
every player should master.
A poker player should always try to find a
table where he thinks he has the largest edge. Focus on winrate and avoid better
opponents. Poker is very competitive by nature, but
a serious poker player should never play
against players that are better than him.
The tables where an edge easily is
obtained is in loose games with
passive players. There are four criteria you
should look for before selecting a table.
1. Percentage of players to the flop
2. Average potsize
3. Fish at the table
4. Number of regulars at the table
Percentage of players to the flop
Tables with a high percentage of
players on the flop are the best to join. Always try to find tables with percentages above 35%
which are typically very loose. These percentages can be found in the lobby of
the online poker room software.
Average potsize
Always look for tables with a high average potsize.
This means that more money is invested in pots with weaker hands. Many weak passive players and calling
stations can be found at these tables
Fish at the table
This one speaks for itself. Tables with many fish are the
best tables to join. Always join the waitinglist if a fish you know is
playing at the
table.
Number of regulars at the table
Always avoid tables with
regulars. Playing at a table full of regulars and good players will hurt your winrate.
This
criteria for selecting a table is a
bit tricky because a person can also have an edge on some regular
players. However, always focus on the first three factors before
trying to outplay the bad regulars.
